A Grandma's Testimony About Home Schooling

A few weeks ago, we posted a blog about how grandparents are taking a more active role in the homeschooling of their grandchildren. Although it may sound intimidating at first, we've been blown away at how rewarding it is for many grandparents who jump in with both feet.

We wanted to share another recent testimonial from a sun-loving grandma from Florida, who has been excited to see just how effective this approach can be (even if she was hesitant to give it a shot!).

Here is her story, in her own words:

"Newly retired, living in Florida, where everyday is a holiday, it never crossed my mind that two of our grandchildren would be living with us and I would be homeschooling them. Thankfully, I was put in touch with Basic Christian Education and they made the way easy.

The first step was the Diagnostic Testing. This was so helpful. They could work at the level that they were at, instead of their age grade of third and fifth grade. The PACE’s that were sent by BCE were custom made for them and their learning needs, and very affordable. They were on the path of success rather than failure. Up front, we knew their strengths and weaknesses. We found one was below grade level in Math and the other was below grade in English. Thankfully through a program fit to their needs we were  able to turn this around. 

Each morning they set their own goals as to how many pages in each PACE they would do. This prevented me from hearing “Can we be done?” Everything I needed to be successful as their teacher was in each PACE. If I had questions or problems, help was a phone call away at BCE. They also directed me to computer programs to reinforce Math skills. I loved the fact that each PACE had a memory Bible verse, such a great way to build a strong foundation in a child. Looking back I wish I had home schooled my own children. 

My grandchildren had a very successful school year. This year they are back in Public School. Our 5th grader, now in 6th, was the only student in the entire 6th grade, who got straight “A’s”.  

Whether you have grandchildren living with you or not or maybe you want to help them get up to grade level in a certain subject, I highly recommend this program."
